“Discovery to Delivery” - Dr. Sangtae Kim, Executive Director, Morgridge Institute for Research, UW-Madison
The Morgridge Institute for Research (MIR) is the private side of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (WID). WID/MIR is a $150 million investment that will enable researchers from diverse fields to collaborate in biology and human health, using nanotechnology and other tools to discover treatments and cures for devastating diseases.
Dr. Kim will discuss:
- How MIR will facilitate groundbreaking collaborative research;
- How WID/MIR is designed to provide education and interaction with the broader Wisconsin community;
- Assistance to entrepreneurs to transform university discoveries into successful business ventures.
“Wisconsin’s BioAg Gateway: Where Science Grows” – Michael Gay, Director, Wisconsin BioAG Gateway, City of Madison
Michael Gay will share his vision for a world class facility that positions Madison and Wisconsin as a hotbed for progressive thinking and discovery.
Michael will discuss:
- The BioAg Market-Why here, why now? Timing, competition, pillars to success;
- The Big Picture-Location, history, investments, objectives and components;
- Next Steps–2010 Agenda and opportunities for partnership/sponsorship.
“Vestas Wind Energy Partnership with UW-Madison College of Engineering” – Steven Fredette, Sr. Project Manager, Vestas Technology R&D Americas, Inc.
Vestas, the world's largest manufacturer of wind turbines, has just opened an R&D office in Madison. Vestas has the industry's largest R&D unit with research centers in Denmark, Singapore, India, the United Kingdom and new R&D units in the United States.
Steven will discuss:
- Why Vestas chose to open an R&D office in Madison;
- What they hope to accomplish in partnership with UW-Madison College of Engineering;
- Trends in the wind industry.

Presenters
Dr. Sangtae Kim, Morgridge Institute for Research, UW-Madison
Dr. Kim is a Purdue University a distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering. He has also led R&D efforts at pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly and Pfizer. Sangtae has a master’s degree from the California Institute of Technology and a doctorate in chemical and biological engineering from Princeton University.
Michael P. Gay, Business Development Coordinator
Office of Business Resources, Economic Development Division, City of Madison
Michael has spent the last 5 years working in partnership to develop the BioAg Gateway campus and BioLink facility and is its Managing Director. Michael has a BS in Public Administration from UW- Green Bay and an MS in Urban and Regional Planning from UW-Madison.
Steven Fredette, Sr. Project Manager, Vestas Technology R&D Americas, Inc.
Steven has over 17 years of engineering experience in companies including United Technologies, Square D and Eaton. He is establishing the Vestas Madison R&D office and will conduct research on next generation power conversion for wind turbines in part through collaboration with the UW-Madison. Steven has a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from UW-Madison.
