SBDC Instrumental in Growing Madison Design-Build Business
When Dani Michels started her interior design-build construction business, Commercial Interior Contractors, she was a one woman show, working on a laptop computer from her home office and often from her car. Though off to a good start, she was ready to grow her business.

“I knew where I wanted to go and had some ideas about how to get there, but desperately needed a sounding board and some solid advice,” recalls Michels. She found that in University of Wisconsin-Madison Small Business Development Center counselor Jack Reiners.
“He gave me guidance, advice, feedback and validation, everything I needed to actually execute the ideas I had about getting from there to here,” says Michels.
“Today I have three full-time employees, office space and all the additional equipment and infrastructure needed to support our collective activities. Best of all, 2007 revenues were four times greater than 2006 revenues, with healthy profits.”
Michels hopes to continue that steady, healthy growth and become more recognized in the marketplace. And as she grows her business, she still turns to Reiners for advice.
“I can honestly say that I don’t know what I’d do without him,” Michels adds. “Working with him and the SBDC has been one of the best things about operating my own business.”
